Name: Nellie Hooker Date: June 21st, 1919 - June 30th, 2009 Obituary: ADRIAN - Nellie R. Hooker, age 90, of Adrian, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Nellie was born June 21, 1919 in Dublin, West Virginia the daughter of Harry and Genevieve (Vipperman) Rakes. On March 8, 1943, Nellie married Everett Hooker in Brooklyn, MD. Nellie and Everett celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to his death in 2003. In her younger years, Nellie worked with a doctor in Virginia as a midwife, delivering babies in a coal-mining community, including a younger brother. Nellie’s greatest joy was her family. She treasured time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nellie also enjoyed camping, gardening and wintering in Hernando, Florida with Everett. Nellie was a faithful member of the Madison Church of the Nazarene. She was also a member of the Madison Moms and Dads Club. Nellie is survived by her six children, Larry (Sherry Bowen) Hooker of Traverse City; Danney (Linda) Hooker of Adrian; Shirley (Roger) Summers of Adrian, Janet (Jimmie) Mitchell of Clayton; Michael (Janet) Hooker of Adrian; and Kevin (Scott Lopez) Hooker of Milwaukee; her siblings, Roy Rakes of Adrian; Charles Rakes of Christianburg, VA; Margie Gier of Laurel Fork, VA; Ruby Keith of Chesterfield, VA and Eunice Bowman of Meadows of Dan, VA. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren: Kemi, Kasi, Kyle, (and their mother, Linda), Toby, Tanya, Aimee, Laura, Marsha, Jennifer ‘Maude’, J.R., Michael, Sarah, David, Brandon, Andrea, Derek (and his mother, Sheryl); and 24 great grandchildren: Jacob, Jordan, Courtney, Madison, Aiden, Mary, Katie, Kim, Mindy, Kylee, Brett, Seth, Skyler, Mitchell, Zoie, Brooke, Elise, Andrew, Zeke, Alex, Aaron, Ethan, Hailey, and Colin, and many loving relatives and friends here and in the south. In addition to her husband, Nellie was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth; and three brothers, Oscar, Lloyd and Bonnie Rakes. The funeral service for Nellie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 3, 2009 at Wagley Funeral Home with Rev. Geoff Koglin officiating. Burial will follow at Fairfield Cemetery.
