Name: Elsie Nearhood Date: December 15th, 1922 - August 14th, 2009 Obituary: ROSEVILLE, MI – Elsie A. Nearhood, age 86, formerly of Adrian, passed away Friday, August 14, 2009 at Henry Ford Nursing Home in Roseville. Elsie was born December 15, 1922 in Weston, Michigan, the daughter of Elmer and Marie (Story) Rickard. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1941. On June 20, 1941, Elsie married Harold Nearhood in Adrian. Harold, her husband of over 58 years, preceded her in death in 1999. Elsie worked at the A & P grocery store for many years, retiring in the early 1980’s. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she directed the children’s choir. A devoted mother, Elsie was a Cub Scout leader as well as a Girl Scout leader. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Elsie is survived by her children, Dan (Judy) Nearhood of Grosse Pointe Woods; Sylvia (Andrew) Slayton, Jr. of Adrian; Toni Thomley of Waterville, OH; and Patricia (Dave) Davis of Tecumseh; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Eunice Wilson. The funeral service for Elsie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Wagley Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Brundage officiating. Burial will be private.
